If you have spent any time with me, you know I LOVE a good rug. Rugs serve two purposes in my home, style, and function. Living in a colder climate with hardwood floors, my feet can get a little chilly. A rug in each room helps to warm up the space and provides a cozy feel when I step out of bed in the morning. The rugs I have chosen for my home also help to elevate my décor by adding neutral elements to each room.
Below I have addressed frequently asked questions you may come across when searching for your own rug. Remember, the rug you choose can be both functional AND stylish, no need for a compromise, promise!
The first step when choosing a rug is deciding on the space you will use it in. I have a few rules you can follow when choosing the perfect area rug. If the rug will be placed in your living room, aim to have all the front legs of each furniture piece anchored on the rug. If you are in between sizes, always size up.
If searching for a bedroom rug, the rug should be as wide as the bed with an extra foot on each side. Lay down the rug with the short end running parallel to your bed, so it’s at least halfway toward the head of the bed, but not all the way under.
When choosing a rug for your dining room, ensure both the table and chairs can fit on the rug when pushed in AND pulled out.
Lastly, if you are searching for a runner, aim for the length to be 75% of the total space. For a 10ft hallway, an 8-9ft rug would be a great choice.
When a rug is placed on a carpet, there is no need for an underpad. I recommend purchasing an underpad if you plan to lay your rug on a harder surface such as tile, hardwood, or laminate. I have owned both a cheaper version of an underpad and a higher-priced one. If your budget allows, I highly recommend investing in the premium underpads from Rugs USA. I use these in my home and absolutely love them.
I feel machine-washable rugs can be beneficial for certain areas of your home. The benefit of a machine washable rug is that you can scrunch it up and pop it in your washer when needed. This can be extremely helpful for rugs under your dining room table or in your entranceway. There are select brands that create machine-washable rugs which can unfortunately narrow your search for the perfect rug. In my home, I have two washable rugs, one in my dining room and the other in my daughter’s play space. The brand I use in my home is called Ruggable, if you’re interested in a washable rug, you can find them here.
I highly recommend Gorilla Mounting Tape as a solution to keeping the edges of your rug from curving upwards. This tape works magic on any rug that is placed over a hard surface. When applying the tape make sure to clean the area with rubbing alcohol to ensure the surface is free from dirt and oils. Next, apply the double-sided tape and put compression on the area for 60 seconds to ensure strong adhesion. If you ever need to remove the tape in the future, use Goo Gone or lemon essential oil to remove any unwanted stickiness.
